Application Timeline & Qualifying Exam Waivers

The Department's Academic Committee generally accepts applications for publication review and qualifying exam waivers before the 2nd, 8th, and 14th weeks of each semester. The exact application periods are subject to the latest announcements on the department's website.

The regulations for waiving Ph.D. qualifying exam subjects, as approved by the Academic Committee and Department Affairs Meeting, are detailed below:

  1. Students who fail to pass the qualifying exam within the time limit must check the unpassed subjects and submit a one-time waiver application before the end of their fifth semester of enrollment.
  2. The waiver application timeline generally follows the publication review schedule, accepted in the 2nd, 8th, and 14th weeks of each semester.
  3. Recognized courses for waiver are Advanced Algorithms or Algorithms (to waive "Algorithms"), Operating Systems (to waive "Operating Systems"), and Computer Architecture (to waive "Computer Architecture"). Waivers based on course grades require completion of the course and receipt of the grade before application.

2018.10.09 Revision Notes:

  • 1. For those waiving the qualifying exam by publishing papers, obtaining invention patents, presenting competition/exhibition works, and passing recognized courses, the timeframe for achieving these outcomes has been relaxed (not limited to after enrollment), but they must be published under the full name of the department.
  • 2. The author order requirements for waiving the qualifying exam and publication review have been clarified. As this is stricter than before, it applies to students admitted from Academic Year 107 onwards.

2017.03.15 Revision Notes:

  • Raised the course waiver grade threshold to 90 points, and only one condition needs to be met. Retroactively applicable to courses taken from the 1st semester of Academic Year 105.

2015.06.24 Revision Notes:

  • 1. The qualifying exam requires passing any two selected subjects. Applicable to Ph.D. students admitted in or after Academic Year 104.
  • 2. Added the option to apply for graduation via industry-academia collaboration. See file downloads for related application forms.
  • 3. For graduation via paper publication, top international conference papers are added to the publication review.

2012.06.20 Revision Notes:

  • Raised the publication review threshold to two papers. Applicable to Ph.D. students admitted in or after Academic Year 101.

2011.01.12 Revision Notes:

  • Removed the rule of dismissal upon failing the proposal oral defense to comply with academic policies.
