Department Overview

The Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at National Central University is one of the strongest computer science programs in Taiwan. In 1981, the Institute of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering was founded. The Institute first offered the Master program and then the Doctoral program in 1988. In 1992, the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering was established. The department started to offer an Undergraduate program, setting up a complete system for computer science education and research. Currently we have 387 undergraduates, 140 students in the M.S. program, and 69 students in the Ph.D. program, for a total of 677 students. Up to June in 1999, 246 B.S., 197 M.S. and 25 Ph.D. students are graduated from this department.

The undergraduate program is designed for students whose interest is in computer science and information engineering. It gives the students an ample opportunity to obtain a broad knowledge of computer science and the freedom to tailor the program according to the student’s individual needs. The wide spectrum of courses offered by the department can be classified into four categories: fundamental theories in computer science, system software, computer hardware, and courses related to the more applied aspects in computer science.

The objective of the Master program is to train a group of professional computer engineers to conduct research in the future and to provide continuing education for educators and engineers, keeping them abreast of recent developments in the rapidly changing field of computer science and information engineering. The program for the Doctoral Degree brings the students to a more advanced level in computer science, studying the state-of-the-art theories and technologies in computer science.

The faculty of the department conducts research projects at the frontiers of many key areas of computer science. Areas of the active research include Algorithms, Parallel and Distributed Systems, Software Engineering, Learning Technology, Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, Database Systems, Image Processing and Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence, Pattern Recognition, Virtual Reality, Computer Networks, Network Security, and Soft Computing. The research groups at the institute can be divided into 7 laboratories: Database Laboratory, Software Engineering Laboratory, High-Speed Communication and Computing Laboratory, Learning Technology Laboratory, Image Processing and Virtual Reality Laboratory, Distributed Systems Laboratory, as well as Artificial Intelligence and Pattern Recognition Laboratory. All these laboratories are well equipped.
